Upcoming Project - Mi Cometa: Microcredit Program for 157 Impoverished Families

Microcredit and Vocational Training Education Program

Guayaquil, ECUADOR

Mi Cometa seeks to improve the abilities, skills, and business opportunities for the families of Guayaquil, Ecuador through microcredit financing and training programs.  This project will support 157 impoverished families, creating opportunities for sustainable living through small business entrepreneurship.

Many vulnerable communities within South Guasmo, the most impoverished area of the city of Guayaquil, Ecuador, do not generate the necessary income to meet their most basic needs.  These communities include men, women, children, seniors and disabled people of all ethnic groups.

Their average monthly income per family is only $250, well below what is required to sustain an adequate living.  Currently, the average family consists of five members.  In Ecuador, the basic family budget (the amount needed to meet most basic needs) exceeds $500 per month.  More than 70% of the people targeted by Mi Cometa work in informal sectors leading to high unemployment rates, domestic violence, and poor academic performance due to malnutrition.

Mi Cometa is a microcredit initiative focused on production in footwear, clothing and household items, as well as in agriculture.  In addition to aiding in the development of small businesses to improve each family’s quality of life, Mi Cometa will provide each family with a complete training program to strengthen their overall capacity for economic growth.

The training program consists of 50 hours of workshops in leadership for each family and will include education in marketing and advertising, leadership development, conflict resolution, personal motivation, civil participation, microcredit and finance.
